MTV has announced that Taylor Swift will be the inaugural recipient of the MTV VMA Artist Director Honours, a new prize to be handed out during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. The award is intended to recognise an artist’s sustained and influential body of work as a director, honouring those who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a distinct directorial voice. The honour will be presented during the live broadcast of the VMAs on 27 September, simulcast on CBS and MTV and streamed on Paramount+.

Record VMA director wins, multiple Grammys and blockbuster tour and film
MTV pointed to Swift’s expanding approach to storytelling — creating interconnected narratives, cinematic worlds and recurring details — as part of the reason for the honour. Her VMA record includes four Best Director wins and three further nominations. Swift is also the only person to have won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year four times, most recently for Midnights in 2024, and she has 14 Grammy Awards from 58 nominations overall. Her 2023–24 Eras Tour grossed more than $ 2.07 billion from nearly 150 shows worldwide, and the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour became the top-grossing concert movie of all time, reportedly bringing in $180.8 million worldwide.
2026 VMAs to air live on CBS, MTV and Paramount+
CBS and MTV will simulcast the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards live at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on 27 September. The ceremony will also stream live on Paramount+. The new Artist Director Honours will be presented during that live broadcast as part of the show’s programming for the night.
